Infiltration operations designed to monitor and influence the mainstream press have been in action for at least fifty years. Deliberate distortions and confusions of the truth are published in order to maintain particular perceptions. Since the start of the U.S led Global War on Terror unnamed 'official sources' have increasingly become the basis of reporting. Through strategically placed stories hysteria can be whipped up, emotions can be enraged and public opinion can be swayed. Propaganda is what it used to be called.
